What is the DMV permit test?
The learner's permit knowledge test is the written exam new drivers take to earn a learner's permit. It checks your knowledge of traffic laws, road signs, and safe-driving practices before you are allowed to practice driving on public roads under supervision. What's on the permit test
The test typically covers three broad areas: road signs (recognizing the shapes, colors, and meanings of regulatory, warning, and guide signs), rules of the road (right-of-way, speed limits, turning, passing, parking, and lane use), and safe driving and laws (following distance, impaired driving, school buses, and your state's specific laws). Questions are multiple-choice.
Passing score and format
The number of questions and the passing score are set by each state. Many states require around 80% correct, and tests commonly have somewhere in the range of 20 to 50 questions, but this varies, so check your state's DMV. Some states administer the test on a computer at the DMV office. A few questions are often dedicated specifically to road signs.
How to study for the permit test
Read your state's official driver handbook from cover to cover — it is the source of every question. Pay special attention to road-sign shapes and colors (a red octagon is always stop, yellow diamonds are warnings) and to right-of-way rules, which are heavily tested. Then take practice tests repeatedly until you consistently score well above the passing threshold. Practicing with explanations helps you understand why each rule exists, which makes the answers easier to remember.
Test-day tips
Bring the documents your DMV requires (identification and any required forms). Read each question fully — some include the word 'not' or 'except.' Do not rush; eliminate clearly wrong answers and choose the safest, most law-abiding option, which is usually correct on a permit test.
