CDL · Driver Fatigue

What is the most effective remedy for driver fatigue?

Correct answer

A short nap of 10 to 45 minutes

  1. A Strong coffee and energy drinks
  2. B Loud music and an open window
  3. C A short nap of 10 to 45 minutes
  4. D Talking to another driver on the CB radio

Why this is the answer

The only effective remedy for sleepiness is sleep. A short nap of 10 to 45 minutes restores alertness far more reliably than caffeine, fresh air, music, or conversation. Caffeine helps mild fatigue but cannot overcome real sleep debt, and the crash after caffeine often makes things worse. Cold air and loud music feel stimulating but do not address the underlying problem; once the novelty wears off the driver returns to dangerous drowsiness. CB conversation can keep a driver awake briefly but is no substitute for sleep and is itself a distraction. Plan to drive when you are normally awake, get adequate sleep before long trips, and pull off and rest when you start to feel drowsy. Microsleeps — episodes of involuntary sleep lasting one to several seconds — can occur even when a driver believes they are alert.
