1. What is the most important rule for descending a long, steep grade in a commercial vehicle?

Explanation

Service brakes alone overheat on long grades, leading to brake fade where the brakes become progressively less effective and can ultimately fail entirely. The rule of thumb is to select a gear lower than the gear you used to climb the hill, though modern engines often allow a slightly higher gear on the way down. Coasting in neutral on a downgrade is illegal in most states and extremely dangerous because you lose engine braking entirely and gain speed quickly. Using the parking brake to control speed will burn it up and leave you with no emergency brake. If service brakes overheat, use a runaway truck escape ramp without hesitation.

Explanation

Escape ramps are designed and built for one purpose: to stop a runaway commercial vehicle safely when the driver has lost control of speed on a downgrade. If you find yourself accelerating uncontrollably on a downhill and brakes are not holding, take the escape ramp immediately — do not wait to see if you can recover, and do not worry about traffic, fees, or damage to your truck. An escape ramp will stop you in a fraction of the distance you would travel before crashing if you do not use it. Most escape ramps use deep loose gravel or sand and slope uphill, bringing the vehicle to a stop in 200 to 700 feet. Damage to the truck is usually minor, and there is generally no fine. Hesitation kills.

Explanation

Selecting a LOWER GEAR BEFORE the descent is one of the most critical mountain driving safety rules. WHY BEFORE, NOT DURING: Once a heavy vehicle begins descending a grade at speed, the kinetic energy is enormous — the engine compression braking effect is minimal unless the drivetrain is in a low enough gear. Attempting to downshift while rolling fast down a steep grade often results in failed shifts (grinding, inability to engage gear) because the engine RPM and road speed are mismatched. The vehicle then continues accelerating with no engine braking. WHICH GEAR TO SELECT: Use a gear lower than you would use to climb the same grade at the same speed. If you'd climb in 4th gear at 30 mph, descend in 3rd or lower. Check for posted advisory speeds and maximum grade percentage signs — these give guidance. THE SPEED-SELECTION PRINCIPLE: Select a speed you are confident you can hold throughout the descent using engine braking + occasional brake taps, without sustained brake application. Sustained brake application leads to brake fade. STAB BRAKING FOR DESCENT: Hard brake application (building pressure) → release completely → let brakes cool → hard application again. Never ride the brakes lightly for extended periods. RUNAWAY TRUCK RAMPS: Escape ramps are built into steep grades for vehicles that have lost braking control. Know they exist and be willing to use one — it's not a failure, it's a life-saving tool.
