A bus pre-trip includes everything required of any commercial vehicle plus items unique to carrying people: every emergency exit must be working and not blocked, access doors and panels secured, the emergency exit handles and any required signs in place, all handrails and stepwells clear, and every passenger seat firmly attached to the bus. The driver also checks that required emergency equipment is present. Because passengers depend on the driver, the manual stresses that no defect affecting their safety — a loose seat, a stuck exit, a missing fire extinguisher — is acceptable, and a bus with such a defect must not be driven until it is repaired.
