Motorcycle · Starting and Stopping

What is the recommended way to stop a motorcycle in the shortest safe distance under normal conditions?

  1. A Use only the rear brake
  2. B Use both the front and rear brakes together
  3. C Use only the front brake
  4. D Downshift without braking

Why this is the answer

For the shortest safe stop, a rider should use both brakes together. The front brake provides the majority of stopping power (about 70% or more) because weight transfers forward during braking, pressing the front tire into the road. The rear brake adds control and additional stopping force. Using only the rear brake greatly lengthens stopping distance and can cause a skid, while using only the front brake wastes the rear's contribution. The technique is to apply both smoothly and progressively, squeezing the front lever and pressing the rear pedal at the same time.
