Motorcycle · Turning and Cornering

What is the recommended approach to taking a curve, sometimes summarized as 'slow, look, press, roll'?

  1. A Accelerate hard into the curve
  2. B Slow to a safe entry speed before the curve, look through the turn to where you want to go, press to countersteer and lean, and roll on the throttle smoothly through the curve
  3. C Brake continuously through the entire curve
  4. D Close your eyes and coast

Why this is the answer

The MSF cornering technique is 'slow, look, press, roll.' Slow: reduce to a safe entry speed before you enter the curve, doing your braking while upright. Look: turn your head and eyes through the curve to where you want to go, since you tend to go where you look. Press: countersteer by pressing the handgrip on the inside of the turn to lean the bike. Roll: gently roll on the throttle through the curve to stabilize the motorcycle. Entering at the right speed and looking through the turn are the most important parts; braking hard mid-curve risks a skid.
