At what age does the American Cancer Society recommend women with average risk begin annual mammography screening?

ACS MAMMOGRAPHY GUIDELINES (2023): Women at AVERAGE RISK should have the OPTION to start annual mammography at age 40; should START annual mammography at age 45; can TRANSITION to every other year at age 55 if they choose; should CONTINUE screening as long as they are in good health and have a 10+ year life expectancy. AVERAGE RISK means no personal history of breast cancer, no family history suggesting elevated risk, no genetic mutation (BRCA), and no prior chest radiation. HIGH-RISK women: annual mammography plus MRI beginning at age 30, or earlier. USPSTF GUIDELINES differ slightly: recommend every 2 years from age 50-74 for average-risk women. Candidates should know the ACS guidelines as they are most commonly tested on NCLEX.
