DMV Permit · Highway Driving

If you miss your exit on the highway, you should:

  1. A Stop on the shoulder and back up to the exit
  2. B Make a U-turn through the median
  3. C Continue to the next exit and turn around there
  4. D Cross the grass median to reach the opposite direction

Why this is the answer

If you miss an exit, continue to the next exit, get off there, and turn around. Backing up on a highway shoulder is extremely dangerous and illegal in every state — vehicles behind you cannot see your reverse maneuver in time to react. Crossing the median is also illegal and dangerous on a divided highway. The additional time spent driving to the next exit is the inconvenience cost of a missed exit; the alternative costs far more. Plan your route in advance so you know which exit you need, and pay attention to mile-marker signs that often warn of approaching exits. GPS systems can also recover quickly from a missed exit by routing you to the next available turnaround.
