Why this is the answer
SMOOTH PROGRESSIVE BRAKING is the professional standard for commercial vehicle stops. It contrasts with both panic-style hard braking and the 'tap-tap-hard' technique some drivers learn. THE TECHNIQUE: (1) BEGIN BRAKING EARLY — commercial vehicles need more stopping distance than cars; plan stops 2-4 seconds earlier than a car driver would; (2) APPLY PROGRESSIVELY — start with light pedal pressure, increase smoothly to the desired deceleration rate; this allows: cargo to settle rather than lurch forward; air pressure to distribute evenly to all circuits; following drivers to see brake lights and begin slowing themselves; the driver to feel brake response and adjust; (3) MAINTAIN STEADY PRESSURE — hold a constant deceleration throughout the main part of the stop; (4) EASE OFF JUST BEFORE STOPPING — a slight reduction in pressure in the last few mph prevents the harsh 'final lurch' when fully stopped; this is particularly important with tanker loads (liquid surge) and with passengers. WHY NOT MAXIMUM PRESSURE IMMEDIATELY: Sudden hard application causes: load shift (cargo can be damaged or shift weight dangerously); following vehicle collisions (drivers behind need time to react); wheel lockup risk (on slippery surfaces); discomfort for passengers. BRAKE MAINTENANCE NOTE: Progressive braking actually prolongs brake life — constant hard stops wear lining unevenly and generate more heat than necessary.
