Why this is the answer
REARWARD AMPLIFICATION is a physics phenomenon specific to multi-trailer combinations (doubles and triples) that dramatically affects handling. THE PHYSICS: When the tractor makes a steering input (lane change, curve, evasive maneuver), this movement is transmitted to the first trailer through the fifth wheel; the first trailer must track through a slightly wider arc than the tractor; the second trailer, articulated at the converter dolly, must track through an even wider arc; the third trailer (if present) through even wider still — AMPLIFICATION FACTOR: Typical doubles combinations have a rearward amplification factor of approximately 2-3 for a moderate maneuver; this means a small 2-foot lane deviation in the tractor becomes a 4-6 foot deviation in the last trailer; a sudden evasive maneuver at highway speed can amplify to the point of rollover in the last trailer; PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Doubles and triples require much more space — especially in lanes, on curves, and approaching exits; lane changes must be gradual and slow; the driver cannot react as quickly as with a single trailer; do not tailgate (more distance needed to respond safely); avoid evasive swerving — it is usually safer to brake hard than to swerve in a multi-trailer combination; EXAM FOCUS: This concept explains why LCV (Long Combination Vehicle) operation requires additional training and endorsement.
