Why is it important to check the suspension during a pre-trip inspection?

Suspension components hold the axles in place and keep the cargo from shifting. A broken spring leaf, missing U-bolt, leaking air bag, or worn shock absorber can let an axle move out of position, cause the vehicle to lean, or allow excessive bouncing that disturbs cargo securement. In extreme cases, suspension failure can cause loss of vehicle control or a wheel separation. Pre-trip inspection of the suspension includes checking spring hangers, U-bolts, leaf springs (looking for cracks or shifted leaves), air suspension bags for leaks or damage, and shock absorbers for leaks. Federal inspection procedures require suspension to be checked every trip, not just at annual inspection. Even minor suspension problems can become catastrophic at highway speed or under heavy load.
