During the pre-trip walk-around inspection, what should you check on all tires?

A proper tire inspection covers multiple components: TREAD DEPTH — minimum 4/32 inch on steering axle tires, 2/32 inch on other axles; use a tread depth gauge or penny test; INFLATION — tires should be properly inflated per manufacturer specs; underinflation causes heat buildup and blowouts; overinflation reduces traction; use a tire gauge, not just visual inspection; VALVE STEMS — check for damage, bending, or missing caps; a damaged valve stem is a rapid deflation waiting to happen; SIDEWALL CONDITION — look for cuts, bubbles, bulges, exposed cords, or cracking; these indicate internal damage; DUAL TIRES — ensure duals are not touching (causes heat buildup and accelerated wear) and no rocks or debris are lodged between them (can cause damage and imbalance); also check for missing lug nuts and that rim has no cracks or damage. The CDL pre-trip inspection is not just a formality — federal law requires it (49 CFR 392.7) and examiners in skills tests will deliberately introduce defects. Missing a tire defect can fail the skills test and represents a real safety hazard on the road.
