Why this is the answer
A FRONT TIRE BLOWOUT at highway speed is one of the most dangerous single-tire events a driver can experience. The front axle provides steering — a blowout here causes violent pulling toward the blown tire side and significant instability. CORRECT RESPONSE: (1) GRIP FIRMLY — the steering wheel will pull hard toward the flat tire; maintain a two-handed grip and resist the pull; (2) EASE OFF THROTTLE — gradually reduce engine power; DO NOT stomp the brakes — sharp braking on an unstable vehicle at high speed can cause loss of control; (3) HOLD COURSE — resist the urge to over-steer; controlled resistance to the pull is the right technique; (4) STEER TO SHOULDER — gradually steer toward the right shoulder as speed decreases; (5) BRAKE GENTLY when speed is under 30 mph — normal braking is then safe; (6) SIGNAL, ACTIVATE HAZARDS, STOP SAFELY — never stop in the travel lane if avoidable. WHY NOT BRAKE IMMEDIATELY: At 65 mph, hard braking on a vehicle with a blown steering tire dramatically increases the chance of jackknife (articulated vehicles) or spinout. The vehicle is already destabilized — braking adds weight transfer to the front that worsens the pull. Speed reduction through throttle backing is controlled; panic braking is not. REAR TIRE BLOWOUTS are less dangerous but follow similar principles — avoid panic braking, maintain control, reduce speed gradually.
