1. What is the minimum following distance for a commercial vehicle traveling at 40 mph in good conditions?

Explanation

The FMCSA rule of thumb is one second of following distance for every 10 feet of vehicle length at speeds up to 40 mph. A typical tractor-trailer is around 40 to 50 feet long, requiring four to five seconds of following distance. Above 40 mph, add one additional second. The 'one second per 10 feet' rule accounts for the much longer stopping distance of a loaded commercial vehicle compared to a passenger car. You measure following distance by picking a fixed object on the road such as a sign, and counting the seconds between when the vehicle ahead passes it and when you pass it. One second is dangerously close at any speed for a commercial vehicle. Increase following distance in rain, fog, snow, or when the road is slick.

2. How long does a tractor-trailer typically need to clear an intersection from a complete stop?

Explanation

A loaded 53-foot tractor-trailer accelerating from a standstill needs roughly 14 seconds to fully clear a standard intersection. This is far longer than the time a passenger car needs and matters enormously when judging gaps in cross traffic. A driver pulling onto a road without enough gap can leave the rear of the trailer hanging in the intersection long after the light cycle changes. The exact time depends on grade, load, and gear, but plan for at least 14 seconds when crossing or merging. Underestimating this gap is a common cause of fatal collisions involving commercial vehicles. When in doubt, wait for a clearly larger gap than seems necessary.

3. What is a 'No-Zone' around a tractor-trailer?

Explanation

4. How much space should you maintain between you and the curb when stopped at an intersection on a city street?

Explanation

5. When following another vehicle on a highway at 60 mph, what is the minimum following distance recommended for a CMV driver?

Explanation

WHY TRUCKS NEED MORE SPACE: loaded CMVs can weigh 80,000 lbs vs 4,000 lbs for a car; stopping distance is proportional to weight; a truck needs approximately 300-400 feet to stop at 55 mph compared to 130-160 feet for a passenger car; following at car-driver distances is essentially following too close to stop in time. THE 'LOOK AHEAD' TEST: to measure your following distance, pick a fixed point (sign, shadow, road marker); when the vehicle ahead passes it, count seconds until your front bumper reaches it; if it's less than your target, back off. ADVERSE CONDITIONS: increase following distance in rain, snow, ice, fog, or at night — at least double the minimum distance. PASSING LANE DISCIPLINE: many truck crashes occur when a truck must brake suddenly in the right lane while a car has squeezed into the space in front — maintain following distance and don't allow it to be cut.

6. How much space should a CMV driver allow when passing a cyclist or pedestrian?
  1. A As little as possible to save road space

Explanation

PASSING VULNERABLE ROAD USERS (cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists) requires more care than passing other CMVs. PRACTICAL TECHNIQUE: (1) Increase clearance where possible — if road allows, swing wider; (2) Reduce speed — the pressure wave effect is significantly worse at higher speeds; (3) Tap horn gently to warn the cyclist well in advance (100+ feet before reaching them, not suddenly); (4) Check mirrors AFTER passing to confirm the cyclist wasn't affected; (5) Never pass a cyclist at high speed in a narrow lane if safe passage isn't possible — slow down and wait for a safe opportunity. BRIDGES AND TUNNELS: Particularly dangerous — the confined structure amplifies the air pressure wave and leaves no room for lateral error.
