About the Iowa CDL exam
The Iowa CDL exam is administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation. Like every state, Iowa adopts the federal standards as a baseline and adds state-specific requirements, fees, and procedures.
- Exam / licence fee: approximately $26.
- Skills testing: Iowa DOT driver's license stations.
- Iowa's agricultural exemption is notably broad, covering farm-to-market hauls within 150 air miles that other states restrict more tightly.
To get started, read the official Iowa handbook (linked above), practice with the tests on this page until you consistently score above 80%, and then schedule your exam with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
What's in the Iowa exam: Practice tests for the Commercial Driver's License written exam. Questions reflect the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Commercial Driver's License Manual that all states adopt as the basis for their CDL exams.
