Is it permitted to transport hazardous materials on a passenger bus?

Federal regulations prohibit most hazardous materials on passenger-carrying buses because the consequences of an incident — fire, spill, or release — are catastrophic with passengers aboard. Limited exceptions allow: small arms ammunition (limited quantities); medical oxygen for the driver's personal use or for a passenger who needs it; emergency hospital supplies; small (typically less than 16 oz) containers of common consumer hazmat. Even allowed materials must be secured and not in the passenger compartment when possible. Forbidden materials include: gasoline and most flammable liquids; tear gas; most poisons; explosives; radioactive materials. The driver is responsible for refusing improper cargo regardless of company pressure.
