Why this is the answer
TANKER BRAKING ON SLIPPERY SURFACES requires extra caution because of the compounding of two factors: REDUCED TRACTION from the slippery surface (same as any CMV); LIQUID SURGE that fights braking — when you apply the brakes, the liquid continues moving forward inside the tank, effectively 'pushing' the vehicle forward against the braking force for a brief period. COMBINED EFFECT: On wet pavement, a loaded tanker's stopping distance can be 150-200% longer than an equivalent solid-load truck. SAFE TECHNIQUE: Begin braking much earlier than you would in a solid-load vehicle; apply brakes gradually (progressive braking) — sudden brake application is more likely to cause wheel lockup in a vehicle that has its load trying to push it forward; maintain much larger following distances — the two-second rule is completely inadequate for a tanker in any conditions, let alone slippery ones; use engine braking (lower gears) to slow the vehicle in advance of intersections and hills; AVOIDING JACKKNIFE: Sudden hard brake application on a slippery surface in a combination tanker vehicle can cause the rear to swing out faster than with a solid load because the sudden weight transfer forward (from surge) reduces rear axle traction simultaneously with hard brake application.
