TANKERS ON SLIPPERY ROADS: Wet, icy, or slippery roads combine dangerously with tanker characteristics: REDUCED TRACTION (the slippery surface); LIQUID SURGE (can push the truck, upset balance); HIGH CENTER OF GRAVITY (rollover risk); the combination greatly increases the risk of skidding, jackknifing, and rolling over; DRIVER RESPONSE: Slow down significantly (more than for dry roads); increase following distance (stopping takes much longer with reduced traction plus surge); brake gently and early (hard braking causes skids and increases surge); avoid sudden steering or lane changes; accelerate gently; be especially careful on curves, ramps, and when stopping; HYDROPLANING: At higher speeds on wet roads, tires can lose contact; SURGE ON ICE: A surge that pushes the truck on an icy road can initiate an uncontrollable skid; the tanker driver must respect that all the normal tanker hazards are amplified on slippery surfaces; the safest approach is to slow down well below normal speeds and drive as smoothly as possible; in severe conditions, it may be safest to delay the trip.
