Motorcycle · Shifting and Braking

What is the correct technique for downshifting as you slow to a stop?

  1. A Stay in high gear until stopped
  2. B Downshift progressively as you slow so you are in first gear and ready to go when stopped
  3. C Shift to neutral immediately
  4. D Never downshift

Why this is the answer

As you slow down, you should downshift progressively through the gears so that by the time you stop you are in first gear, ready to accelerate again if needed (for example, to move out of the way of a hazard). Matching the gear to your speed keeps the engine in a usable range and avoids lugging. The clutch is used during each downshift, and easing it out smoothly prevents jerking the rear wheel. Coasting in neutral or staying in a high gear leaves you unable to accelerate quickly and reduces control, so progressive downshifting to first by the stop is the recommended technique.
