Why should a rider choose a lane position that maximizes visibility and space?

A rider should constantly adjust lane position (within the lane) to be seen by others and to maintain space cushions and escape routes. Because motorcycles are small and easily hidden in blind spots, choosing a position where you are visible to drivers — and out of their blind spots — reduces the chance of being cut off. Keeping space ahead, to the sides, and a planned escape path gives room to react to hazards. The best lane position changes with conditions: it might shift to avoid a car's blind spot, to be seen at an intersection, or to avoid road hazards and debris.
