What information is typically shown on a green highway exit sign?

Highway exit signs are green and typically show: the exit number (often matching the milepost, so Exit 47 is at approximately mile 47), the route(s) the exit connects to, the major destinations served by the exit, and sometimes distance to the exit (mile and quarter-mile markers in advance). Exit numbering increases west-to-east and south-to-north in most states, so a series of increasing exit numbers tells you the direction you are heading. Multiple exits combined into one interchange may be marked Exit 47A and 47B. Plan lane changes early — getting to the right lane at the last second is dangerous. If you cannot get to your exit safely, continue to the next exit and use it as a turnaround.
