What should a driver do immediately upon hearing or seeing emergency vehicle sirens and lights approaching?

EMERGENCY VEHICLE RIGHT-OF-WAY: REQUIRED BY LAW: All drivers must immediately yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles using sirens and/or flashing lights (police, fire, ambulance). PROCEDURE: Signal and pull to the RIGHT edge of the road; stop completely; remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has fully passed and is a safe distance ahead; check for additional emergency vehicles before proceeding. COMMON MISTAKES: Pulling to the LEFT (wrong direction — this places you in the emergency vehicle's path if it needs to pass in the opposite lane); stopping in the middle of the lane; continuing to drive while only slowing. AT INTERSECTIONS: If you are already in an intersection, clear the intersection before pulling to the right — don't stop in the middle of an intersection. If the emergency vehicle is approaching but you haven't entered the intersection yet, stop before the intersection.
