Why this is the answer
PINTLE HOOK AND RING CONNECTION is the coupling between the converter dolly's drawbar and the first semitrailer's rear pintle ring. A failure here separates the rear half of the combination at highway speed. VERIFICATION STEPS: PHYSICAL LATCH: The pintle hook must be fully closed around the pintle ring — the hook jaw wraps around the ring and the safety clasp locks it closed; pull on the connection with your hand to feel for looseness; SAFETY CLASP: The spring-loaded safety clasp must be in the fully secured position — it prevents the hook from bouncing open on rough roads; SHAKE TEST: Push and pull on the dolly drawbar with some force — there should be no separation at the pintle connection; SAFETY CHAINS: Federal regulations require safety chains or cables between the towed unit and the towing vehicle; chains must be crossed under the drawbar (forming an X) to cradle the drawbar if the pintle connection fails; chains must have adequate strength and appropriate length (enough for turns but not dragging); PINTLE RING CONDITION: Inspect the pintle ring itself for wear, cracking, or deformation — a worn ring may allow the hook to slip through under load. CONSEQUENCE OF FAILURE: A failed pintle connection releases the dolly and second trailer — both will have emergency brakes apply automatically (emergency line disconnects), but the separated units can still cause serious crashes in highway traffic.
