What does SIPDE stand for in motorcycle safety?

SIPDE — THE MOTORCYCLE HAZARD RESPONSE PROCESS: SEARCH: Scan the environment 12-15 seconds ahead (roughly 1/4 mile at highway speed) and to the sides; check mirrors every 5-7 seconds; look for potential hazards (turning vehicles, pedestrians, road surface changes); IDENTIFY: Identify specific hazards from your scan — which ones are relevant to your path and timing?; PREDICT: What might the identified hazard do? (A parked car might open its door; a child near the road might run out; a car at an intersection might pull out); DECIDE: What will you do if the predicted hazard occurs? Make your decision before you need to act; EXECUTE: Carry out your decision smoothly if/when the hazard develops; PROACTIVE vs REACTIVE: SIPDE moves the rider from reacting to hazards to anticipating and managing them — the difference between defensive riding and survival riding; Apply continuously throughout every ride.
